Does the word "editing" make shivers go down your spine? People often resist handing their creative efforts over for editing, because they think the editor is going to stomp all over their work. Our philosophy is to be supportive, not stomping.
Our view is that editors are your partners in presenting your writing in the best possible way. We want to coach you and assist you in spotting things that don't work, but that you might have been too close to your work to see. We want to have the document or manuscript that goes out with your name on it to have the best possible content and presentation it can have. We are your strongest advocate.
What we do:
Give full attention to the details
Proofread and correct grammar, punctuation, and spelling
Suggest places where sentence structure can be improved
Spot where some more research needs to be done
Suggest formatting changes for readability
Identify where quotes need to be attributed or permissions to use be obtained
Suggest areas where a re-write might strengthen a section
Share reactions to content from a reader's perspective
Raise questions and concerns for consideration
Editing is the "left-brain" balance for the "right-brain" creative work you do. It takes both for your writing to be most effective. We are also writers, so we understand both sides of the process.
Food for Thought: When you look at the acknowledgement sections of most books...even the most famous of authors thank their editors!
